In the 9th century. B.C., an access system with a 30 meter deep shaft and a 70 meter long tunnel was constructed so that the residents of Tel Megiddo could access the spring waters that were outside the city walls. This allowed the city to be completly sealed suring a siege yet still have fresh water supplies. It was in use until the end of the Iron Age.
